"That is just how society operates"
I have heard too many people use the line "that's how it is, it's the way society operates" as an excuse for ignorance. That fact that our society is set up to function in one way does not make this way of functioning right. Under apartheid society was structured in a way that allowed for all kinds of injustices to be dished out to black people but that did not make it unquestionable; that is why people fought and are still fighting today against it and its legacy. Racism still exists in this world seen in its various overt and more nuanced manifestations all around us. Gender inequality is real and there are established institutions that consciously or unconsciously perpetuate these inequalities. Xenophobia/Afrophobia is the reality of thousands all over the world.
